The orthognathic surgical procedures are performed for the correction of abnormalities of the facial skeleton that are present from the birth or arise during growth or acquired secondarily during lifetime. The variety of the underlying reasons of the facial deformities would require different types of surgical strategies, but mainly orthognathic surgical techniques are preferred for the rehabilitation of the deformities. Due to the cover of this book as orthodontics, I would prefer to summarize some commonly used techniques to correct the dentofacial deformities.
Orthognathic surgery can be used to treat severe orthodontic problems in combination with braces, including the correction of underbites, the relationship between the teeth and the jaw, congenital abnormalities (birth defects) related to jaw development, and sleep apnea.
Orthognathic surgery is performed by either an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in collaboration with an orthodontist. It often includes braces before and after surgery, and retainers after the final removal of braces. Orthognathic surgery is often needed after reconstruction of cleft palate or other major craniofacial anomalies.
Jaw surgery can readjust or realign the jaw. It’s also referred to as orthognathic surgery. It’s performed by oral or maxillofacial surgeons working along with an orthodontist most of the time.
Conditions That Are Commonly Treated with Corrective Orthognathic Surgery
- Open bites, receding chins, and protruding jaws
- Birth defects such as cleft palates
- Malocclusions (also known as bite problems) resulting from underbites or extreme overbites
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Trouble swallowing, chewing, and biting food
- TMJ pain (chronic jaw/joint pain) and headaches
- Unbalanced facial appearance
- Chronic mouth breathing and dry mouth
- Facial trauma
- Strain when the lips meet
