CAS / time

•

This systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that CAS is shortening the operative time and ischemia time for mandibular/maxillary reconstruction. It also leads to a reduction in hospitalization. Additionally, CAS seems to shorten the preoperative planning time for orthognathic surgery.

Time matters – Differences between computer-assisted surgery and conventional planning in cranio-maxillofacial surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

The general health condition in the individual patient and other post-operative complications are factors that always influence the duration of hospitalization regardless of reduced operative time.

There is a need for a larger prospective randomised set-up to be able to draw any conclusions regarding the correlation between CAS and potentially decreased hospitalization.

Thirdly, virtual planning in reconstructive surgery for tumour cases cannot confirm the surgical margins before the operation, which can result in a situation where the surgeon cannot rely on the CAS plan and therefore need to change to a partly “free hand” approach (Culie et al., 2016)
